Magnifica Humanitas, vocation, and discernment

Pope Leo XIV, a former vocation director, released his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, in May 2026, a Vatican treatise focused on preserving human dignity amid rapidly evolving technology. While the Pope’s document does not directly address vocation ministry, it offers insights on vocation and discernment and the importance of listening. 

Among many topics he addresses, the Pope writes about young people, work, and the formation of identity. In paragraph 167, he connects vocation discernment with the human formation that happens through work, relationships, and responsibility:

“Work is not merely a source of income but a crucial sphere in which identity is formed, friendships and relationships are forged, practical responsibilities are learned and one’s vocation is discerned.”

He then refers to the digital world as “a new continent to be evangelized” and encourages adults to rediscover their vocation as teachers, particularly in accompanying children and young people.
