Please introduce yourself and your role with the NRVC.

I am Friar Mario L. Serrano, OFM Conv., a Franciscan Friar Conventual, currently serving as the vocation director for the Province of Our Lady of Consolation (Midwest | Southwest Province). I also serve as the current board chair for the NRVC and have assisted with the Orientation Program for New Vocation Directors and the Fall Convocation.

How did you come to vocation ministry?

As a Franciscan, I was appointed vocation director by the Minister Provincial in 2018. However, I believe I have been involved in vocation ministry since my time of ministering with and among university students (2011-2022). In the university centers, a banner hangs with the words: "Welcome to University Ministry. Where we believe everyone has a calling.”

Share one blessing and one challenge in your work.

Accompanying young people with their honest questions is both a blessing and a challenge. It is clear to me that God continues to call men and women to religious life and to a particular way of living. It is a privilege to walk with discerners as they seek to answer the questions: “Who is God calling me to be?” “Where is God calling me?” “How do I sense the Holy Spirit guiding my next step?”

How has being a member of the NRVC helped you?

NRVC is a vital support network and a community of vocation directors I can rely on. Since my early days in vocation ministry, NRVC has helped me understand my role through programs, workshops, and convocations that promote best practices and offer ideas to engage with today’s diverse discerners. It also provides space to develop professional friendships with fellow vocation directors.

What do you like to do on your time off?

I enjoy relaxing with a good book or a movie, as well as exploring cultural museums or events.
