In the 2020 NRVC/CARA Study on Recent Vocations to Religious Life, major superiors were asked to describe their greatest concern/worry for newer entrants (470 responded) and to describe how they/their institute supports newer entrants (418 responded). Newer entrants were asked to share what most concerns them about their future in religious life (1502 responded) and to imagine, looking ahead at ten years, their hopes for the future in their religious institute (1593 responded). Although cognizant of the challenges and concerns that were expressed by the major superiors, the newer entrants were more optimistic than the superiors in their hopes for the future, perhaps because they recognized their own agency in creating a future for their institute.
