Please introduce yourself and your role with the NRVC.
My name is Bro. Mark Motz, and I am a Marianist in the Society of Mary. I currently serve as the MAC for the Southwest Member Area and have been in active Vocation Ministry for 14 years, while also being the full-time Province Vocation Director for the last 9 years.
How did you come to vocation ministry?
The Vow of Obedience. I say that with some jest, but seriously, I hate to travel and didn't think I was good at public speaking, and yet, what was I asked to do? Travel 2/3 of the year between Hawaii and Ireland, including Mexico and Puerto Rico, and speak publicly about the congregation and charism that I was growing to love at our 17 high schools, three universities, and many other venues. That is what the Vow of Obedience can do: call us out of our comfort zone and encourage the talents that we may not see in ourselves.
Can you share one blessing and one challenge in your work?
I am blessed to hear how God is calling young people to serve the Church; sometimes, I am the first person they have ever shared their story with. One challenge is speaking about the best parts of our lives while answering honestly, but with a polish about some of the worst parts, and then going to a community and not seeing the polished version I work so hard to honestly represent.
How has being a member of the NRVC helped you?
NRVC taught me how to be an ethical, well-trained, and professional vocation director instead of a compassionate, pastoral vocation minister, and most importantly, the ability to know when to direct and when to minister.
What do you like to do on your time off?
I love being outside! Camping, Canoeing, and especially cooking over an open fire!
